It’s been a productive first month freelancing, I got to work on lots of fun stories, mostly for NationalGeographic.com (I did some other assorted work, including for PNAS).

I wrote about the fact that African elephants can apparently understand human pointing gestures, and how dogs react differently when they see other dogs’ tails wagging left versus right.

I also wrote about a new California law banning lead ammunition for hunting, and how it would help the critically endangered California condor.

And I covered a new undersea tunnel in Istanbul and how it was built to resist earthquakes.

It’s been a satisfying month: lots of fun interviews with many different researchers and some expectedly frantic writing and reporting in order to meet some quick deadlines. Basically, everything I expected of freelancing.

Here’s to more of the same! 🙂
