Cell Craft game teaches you how a cell functions Source: cellcraftgame.com

I played through Cell Craft a few days back. It’s a flash game that can be played in your browser (though there’s also a downloadable version), and teaches you how cells work.

It’s a fairly entertaining strategy game where you deploy all your cell’s organelles to defend it from attacking viruses and allow it to survive different conditions. And it can get surprisingly difficult in later levels, with some planning and strategy required to make it all the way to the end.

It also introduces a lot of concepts about the different components of the cell, and the things a cell needs to do to survive. It’s good that so many cellular components and functions are included, and the information seems to be accurate. If anything, it introduces too many concepts…I found it ok thanks to my background in biology, but the details might get a little too overwhelming for some.

At worst, users might be tempted to just click through all the educational stuff, but that would defeat the purpose of the game — it would have been better if what you learn was a little more closely tied to the gameplay itself, rather than just being a reason behind the game mechanics.

However, the gameplay is simple and easy to pick up, and surprisingly deep for a free educational flash game, so I can’t criticize it too hard. And it was actually pretty fun, especially as it introduced more types of organelles and more kinks in the gameplay.

Interestingly, there’s an online debate going on about whether the game is meant to be anti-evolution and introduce concepts of intelligent design. However, as pro-evolution as I am, for once I don’t see this game as being a sneaky way to undermine evolution. While I would have preferred if they had introduced evolution in the game, I can believe the game’s makers when they say it was purely a game design decision, and not meant to promote creationism. But maybe I’m just naive – you can check out coverage of the argument on Wired and Kotaku.

Either way, the game is worth checking out.
