I had the opportunity to write a blog post about how to get into science writing for BioCareers, a site that seems to have lots of useful information about various career/job options for grad students and post-docs. I added my 2 cents about careers in science writing.
I tried to emphasize how broad a field science communication is, with many different kinds of opportunities. I also mentioned how competitive a field it can be, as I remember how being in academia sometimes makes you forget that other fields are not necessarily easier to get a job in.
I hope people find it useful. I still find it strange giving advice on science writing, given that it doesn’t feel like that long ago that I was trying to get advice on how to break into the field. And while I’ve now been a science writer for 4–5 years, I still feel like I have so much to learn and improve upon.
On the other hand I do feel very grateful for all the science writers who were super-helpful with their time and advice and without whom I wouldn’t be in the field right now, so it feels good to be able to do my bit to encourage others who’re interested in science writing careers 🙂
